Here is the work i've done on my first painting (oils - still life) so far.

:aww:

I found one thing i prefer about drawing over painting is that there is no waiting for the pencil work to dry. I find i am fairly impatient about that sort of thing.

Update: Feb 1st, 2007

Darkening the background, and beginning to paint the book... Please excuse the bad flash reflection. Guess i need to set up a place to photograph it that has better lighting and try without the flash.

I'm still hoping to even out the background, maybe blend some of the brush marks so it's not so "stroke-y." And still have to detail on the book, and color the leaves and candle a little (the rose was just white)... But i have to wait for the paint on the book to dry before i can start that.

Any tips on fixing the "stroke-y-ness" of the background?

Update: Feb 5th, 2007

I think i've resolved the issue with the "stroke-y" background. I am still not happy with the lighting when i tried to get a photo (gonna try outdoors next time) so please excuse the light reflections once again.

At this point i'm not sure if i'm going to be adding color... I kinda like the gray-scale look to it (plus i don't really wanna have to deal with coloring the rose - though it was a white rose, i know that it wouldn't be just white... Though the one i had was fake, and it was just white, real white roses have other colors in them...)...

What i do plan on doing next: shading the background and the book.

As far as the background is concerned i think i want to add a base (table, ect) so that the objects are not just floating there on the canvas, and i might do some shading around the objects, like shadow work.

As for the book, i'll be trying to convey where the light source was, though i'm regretting not getting a photo of the initial arrangement, i haven't really been able to duplicate it exactly (of course) so all i have to rely on is my original sketch.

So we'll see how that goes...
